ASL PROGRAM
UNDERSTANDING ASL PROGRAM
An ASL Program (American Sign Language Program) is an educational program offered by high schools, colleges, and universities that teaches students how to communicate using American Sign Language. These programs may be part of ASL-CTE (Career & Technical Education), Interpreter Training Program (ITP), Deaf Studies programs, or language departments.
ASL programs go beyond learning signs. Students also learn about Deaf culture, history, and community values. Because ASL is a visual language, students practice expressive signing, receptive skills, facial expressions, grammar, and real-world conversation.
Who ASL Programs Are For? ASL Programs support many types of learners, including:
- High school and college students learning ASL as a language
- Students preparing for careers in interpreting, education, healthcare, or public service
- ITP and Deaf Studies students
- Anyone passionate about accessibility and inclusion
